A comprehensive guide to Shanghai's most iconic waterfront, the Bund.
The Bund is Shanghai's most famous waterfront promenade, stretching along the western bank of the Huangpu River. Lined with 52 historic buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it represents a collection of architectural styles including Gothic, Baroque, Renaissance, and Art Deco. These buildings were once the headquarters of foreign banks, trading companies, and consulates, earning the Bund the nickname "Wall Street of the East."
Today, the Bund is a major tourist attraction and symbol of Shanghai's history and modernity. It offers stunning views of the Pudong skyline across the river, featuring iconic landmarks like the Oriental Pearl Tower, Shanghai Tower, and Jin Mao Tower. The Bund is also a popular spot for evening walks when the historic buildings are beautifully illuminated.
The recommended route for visiting the Bund starts from Customs House in the south and extends north to Suzhou Creek. This 1.5km walk takes approximately 2-3 hours, allowing you to admire all 52 historic buildings. The best time to visit is during golden hour (1 hour before sunset) when the lighting is perfect for photography, transitioning into the spectacular evening light show.
Key highlights include the Peace Hotel, HSBC Building, and Customs House. For a unique perspective, take a Huangpu River cruise to view the Bund from the water, or cross to Pudong for panoramic photos of the historic skyline.
The map on the right shows the recommended walking route along the Bund.
